Spring Clean Your Skincare in 5 Simple Steps

1. Throw out expired products

We’re all guilty of using skincare past their expiration. In fact, many women aren’t even aware of how long their skincare should last.

On average, here’s how long your cosmetics should last you:

  • Cleanser: Up to 1 year

  • Moisturizer: Up to 1 year

  • Serum: Up to 1 year

  • Foundation: Up to 1 year

  • Concealer: Up to 1 year

  • Face powder: 2 years

  • Eyeshadow: Up to 2 years

  • Mascara: 3 to 6 months

  • Eyeliner: Up to 1 year

  • Brow pencil: 2 years

  • Lip products: 1 to 2 years

  • Perfume: 10 years

  • Nail polish: 2 years

Each product is different, but this should give you an idea of what to expect. You’re probably using cosmetics way past their expiration date unintentionally. Using expired cosmetics can cause irritation, infection, and acne.

Cosmetic labels contain all kinds of information, including how long the product lasts. Check the product for what’s known as a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if this useful symbol was on every product? You can find it now on most quality products.

Because of the lack of regulation in the beauty industry, disclosing expiration information isn’t always required. If you can’t find one, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so throw out any suspicious products and rotate your skincare regularly.

2. Clean your makeup applicators

If you do your makeup every day, you’re likely using makeup brushes, sponges, and other applicators on a regular basis. These applicators come in contact with your makeup products, bathroom counter, and skin. There’s a good chance that those applicators harbour a lot of bacteria and leftover makeup.

These makeup brushes and sponges should be cleaned every single week. Also they should be replaced completely every three months.

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to not only clean your makeup applicators but replace them if needed.

3. Swap winter skincare for spring skincare

Spring cleaning is a good time to switch out products based on the season. If your winter cream is thick and highly protective, you may want to switch it out for a lightweight, water-based formula. If your spring moisturiser contains SPF, even better!

Since spring is associated with allergies, this may also be a good time to add in some antioxidants like Vitamin C to combat allergens.

If the harsh winter weather has left your skin feeling dull and dehydrated, consider getting a facial to revitalize your skin and wake it up for springtime.

Simple Skin Tip: When spring cleaning your beauty routine, be sure to add in a non-toxic safe sunscreen if your moisturiser doesn’t contain SPF.

4. Replace toxic products

This is the fun part! Who doesn’t love shopping? Spring cleaning your beauty routine is the perfect excuse to treat yourself and put your health first.

Yes, we said it: Investing in clean beauty products is investing in your health.

Did you know your skin is your largest organ?

It absorbs whatever you put on it, so it’s super important to be aware of the ingredients in your skincare products.

All of our products include a range of natural and clean science ingredients to give you great results, without the risk. And they’re never tested on animals.

If you’ve never detoxed your beauty cabinet before, you’re going to be in for a shock at how many of your favourite products aren’t what they say they are. The majority of your beauty routine needs to be clean, non-toxic, and safe.

Replacing the majority of your collection at one time may sound daunting. For some of us, it’s a fun opportunity. For others, it’s a chore. If you have a huge beauty collection (no shame!), detoxing your beauty products can be time-consuming. Rather than bombarding yourself with one giant chore, split up your collection into smaller sections.

5. Choose a hydrating facial to transition from winter to spring.

For spring choose a facial that focus on increased blood flow, exfoliating dead skin cells and stimulate cellular activity while infusing skin with hydrating ingredients that will help shed dull winter skin and give skin a healthy glow.

To get that glow we have a special facial package for Spring. Our Hydrate & Refresh Facial featuring Ultra’s new B2 Hydration Mask.  This mask is a moisture-enhancing, oil-free hydrogel mask, utilising the power of the Ultra B2 technology-Panthenol (Provitamin B5) and Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) combined with Sodium Hyaluronate, to synergistically help restore hydration to the skin.
